A laptop, phone, and W-2 on a sunny kitchen island, ready for tax season

Tax preparation, explained in plain English

Your return deserves more than a quick pass through software. We prepare federal, North Carolina, and other state returns, and everyone gets a careful review. If something on yours changed or stands out, we'll make sure you know.

Returns we prepare every season

Individual returns have been at the heart of this firm since 1961. Whether your return includes investments, a rental, or a K-1 that always arrives in late March, we're comfortable with all of it, including:

  • Wages, tips, and overtime
  • Retirement income, Social Security, and required minimum distributions
  • Investments, dividends, and capital gains
  • Rental properties
  • Self-employment and Schedule C businesses
  • Partnership and S corporation K-1s
  • Multi-state and part-year returns
  • Income passed through from trusts and estates
  • Education credits, dependents, and family changes
  • Prior-year and amended returns

More than filling in the boxes

Getting the numbers right is the minimum. We also look at how the pieces fit together, so if your withholding is off or this year will ripple into next, we'll bring it up.

Sometimes that's a two-minute conversation, and sometimes it becomes real planning that continues after tax season.

Three ways to work with us

In the office

Bring your documents to the office and go over them with us in person.

Drop it off

Leave your documents at the office and we'll call when your return is ready, or sooner if we need anything else from you.

Entirely online

Upload everything to your secure portal, review your return on screen, and sign electronically, even if you and your spouse are in different places.

Turnaround depends on the time of year and how complete your documents are. If we're waiting on something, we'll tell you exactly what it is.

What we'll need from you

When you sign up, we'll let you know what we need from you. To get a head start, most returns need:

  • Photo ID for you and your spouse
  • Social Security numbers and birth dates for any dependents
  • Your last two years of returns, if you're new to us
  • Every W-2, 1099, and Social Security statement
  • Income and expense records for rentals or self-employment
  • Records for deductions like mortgage interest, property taxes, medical costs, and charitable gifts

If something big changed this year, like a marriage, a new baby, a new business, or the loss of a spouse, please let us know before we start. It can shape the whole return.
